Shadows of the West

History in Shade

One of the first things I notice when visiting the West from New England is the difference in colors climbing buildings and public spaces. In these photos from Old San Diego, Denver and Paso Robles, I removed the color entirely to explore shadow and texture. For me, purpose and place are prominent in these images. Doorways and walls, a home and an abandoned theater, are ghosts of a life that could only have existed in the American West.
